When to pressure wash around pollen season in the Triangle
Tree and pine pollen usually peak in the Triangle in late March and April, with grass following in May. Here's how to time a wash around it.

The Triangle’s pollen calendar
In a typical year, tree pollen in the Triangle starts in early March, increases sharply by mid-March, and peaks around the first week of April, according to WRAL’s pollen timeline, published in 2022. Pine pollen, the yellow-green dust that coats cars and patio furniture and settles on top of puddles and lakes, typically peaks for about three weeks during that stretch. The worst of the tree pollen usually ends by May, around the same time grass pollen starts to increase.
WRAL’s March 2026 pollen coverage gave a similar outlook: counts typically peak from late March into early April, and tree pollen usually starts to decline by mid-to-late April, with grass and weed pollen increasing heading into May. A related WRAL article on handling pollen, also from March 2026, put the season’s peak between late March and early-mid April, describing cars and windowsills covered with a lime-green film as tree pollen spiked.
Exact timing shifts with the weather each spring, but the pattern in all three articles is the same: tree and pine pollen dominate March into April, then grass follows into May.
Why washing during the pine peak often means washing twice
Pine pollen stays heavy for about three weeks each spring, coating cars and patio furniture the whole time, per the WRAL timeline linked above. A wash booked in the middle of that stretch can end up coated again before the three weeks are out, especially while pollen counts are still climbing.
Timing matters more during the pine peak than at other points in the season.
Booking before or after the peak
Two windows tend to hold up longer than a wash booked mid-peak. Washing before pollen ramps up in early March clears winter grime ahead of the season, though the house won’t stay pollen-free once trees start shedding. Washing after tree pollen has declined, generally by mid-to-late April per the WRAL coverage above, clears both the winter buildup and the spring pollen coating in one visit, before grass pollen picks up in May.
If a wash during the peak weeks is the only option that fits your schedule, ask the company how they’d handle a fresh coating showing up again soon after, and expect the results to hold for less time than they would outside pollen season.
What pollen actually coats
Going by WRAL’s coverage, pollen season here shows up as pine pollen coating cars, patio furniture, sidewalks, and windowsills, and settling across puddles and lakes. Washing removes the coating; how soon it’s back depends on where you are in the three-week pine peak described above.
The bigger risk during pollen season is the same one that exists year-round: too much pressure on the wrong surface. For concrete surfaces like the driveway, see driveway and concrete cleaning; for the rest of the house, our guide on soft washing versus pressure washing covers which method fits which surface.
Fall pollen, briefly
Ragweed becomes one of the more dominant allergens in the Triangle in August and September, according to WRAL’s coverage of ragweed season, published in 2024. Unlike tree and pine pollen, ragweed doesn’t leave the “yellow-covered everything” that tree pollen does, so it isn’t a reason to move a fall wash.
The season typically runs until the first fall freeze, which on average arrives in late October in the Triangle, though the same article notes that freeze has been arriving later, into November, over the past decade.
